ISO 4406 Cleanliness Video, New Rental Equipment, Hydrocarbon Fuel Filters

July 27, 2010

Things have been heating up here at PFP!

  • Have you seen our latest video of ISO 4406 testing?
  • Noticed the additions to our fleet of filtration rental equipment?
  • In the market for a high-quality hydrocarbon fuel filter?

ISO 4406 Cleanliness Test Video

ISO 4406 Cleanliness Test VideoIn this short video we highlight the results of a recent ISO 4406 test conducted in-house for a pipeline customer seeking to provide “cleaner” ultra-low sulfur diesel to their end-user customers. We tested a sample representative of what is coming right off the pipeline, determined the level of contamination, then measured the level of contamination after a single pass through our high-efficiency Beta 1000 Microglass Filter Element. While is it not common practice at this time to utilize standard ISO cleanliness codes to evaluate fuel quality, this test provided an excellent method of measuring the level of particulate contaminant present, and the efficacy of our filter media in a diesel application. The results were fantastic!

Testing Diesel Fuel with ISO 4406 Cleanliness Code

July 15, 2010

Exciting news!

Recently we were asked to assist a customer in delivering higher quality diesel fuel to his end-users. In order to accurately gauge the level of fuel quality required, we felt it was imperative to utilize a more precise method of testing than the standard ASTM specification. To ensure test results were as detailed as possible, we measured the fuel quality with the ISO cleanliness code 4406:1999.

Testing Diesel Fuel with ISO 4406 Cleanliness CodeClick HERE to watch the awesome video NOW! Our goal was not only to establish “new” fuel quality, but also to document the increase in quality after the fuel was passed through high-efficiency filtration media. To provide data in a timely and cost effective manner we chose to analyze the fuel quality on a smaller scale with a filtration test stand. The fuel sample that was provided in a 55-gallon drum was transferred into a clean, empty drum using our 1-GPM Spin-On Filter Panel (SFP). For this process, we equipped the SFP with a single absolute rated 1-micron, micro-glass filter. This fluid transfer package, which includes quick-disconnect hoses/wands and desiccant breathers, ensures that any ingress of contamination is minimized throughout the fluid transfer process.

Using a HIAC PODS (Portable Oil Diagnostic System) Laser Particle Counter, we first established an ISO code baseline for “new” diesel fuel. An in-line sample port located before the filter allowed us to accurately establish a baseline code level of 18/16/12. A sample port located after the filter provided an ISO reading of 13/10/6 after only a single pass of filtration. The second and final pass through the filter lowered the contaminant level even further to achieve an ISO cleanliness code of 11/7/5!

Based upon these results we determined that just one pass through our high-efficiency 1-micron filters will achieve our customer’s required fuel quality. When a larger version of this filtration system is implemented with a full-scale pipeline filter vessel, our customer will have the ability to consistently deliver super-clean fuel to his end-users, which will be of even higher quality than the ASTM standard!

Ethanol Contamination Solved & Vacuum Dehydrator Removes Water

May 20, 2010

A’Hoy Matey! Ethanol Contamination Emergency Solved!

Recently, a ship loading terminal that transports ethanol encountered a fluid contamination emergency. Luckily, the entire operation was saved with an emergency filtration system and a permanent in-line filtration system. During the loading process, the fluid samples started showing signs of particulate/dirt. Upon further inspection it was discovered that all of the terminal’s holding tanks were contaminated. In-Bound Filtration System | Precision Filtration ProductsThis was devastating to all aspects of the business, causing much congestion and frustration as rail cars started piling up, ready to be off-loaded, but unable to do so because of the hold-up.

In order to solve the emergency as soon as possible, we moved a high-flow mobile filtration system into place on a Sunday and the terminal was back to business with passing tests by Monday! In addition, in order to protect the tankage and everything downstream in case of future product quality upsets, we designed and installed an in-line filtration system with a flow rate of 15,000 GPM and 20-inch, ASME 150-lb. flange inlet/outlet connections.

Clearing Up Fluid Catalytic Cracking Slurry Oil

Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) produces high-octane gasoline, C3/C4 olefins, and isobutane by the catalytic cracking of heavy gas oils in a fluid bed reactor. The primary product separation is carried out in a fractionator, which produces gas. This bottoms stream contains the catalyst not collected by the cyclones in the reactor, and is sometimes referred to as slurry oil.

The solids concentration of slurry oil typically exceeds 1500 ppm, which must be lowered substantially before the oil can be sold.Slurry Oil Clarification | Precision Filtration Products We offer effective solutions to filter the slurry oil that reduce its solid content to an acceptable level. The clarified oil can then be sold to carbon black producers at a premium, blended into the No. 6 fuel oil pool without exceeding the alumina specification, or as a boiler fuel without causing fuel nozzle erosion.

Success Story: Power Plant Saves Money Filtering Water

April 27, 2010

WARNING: Failure to maintain quality feed water can be costly!

  • How does RO water treatment affect your bottom line?
  • Have you been adding coagulants to your RO treatment process?
  • Are you experiencing reduced water plant capacity?

The solution may be easier than you think…

In 2006, EnCana’s Cavalier Power Plant found itself unable to provide enough quality feed water to its RO units. The inlet water had very high levels of sub-1μm particles as well as an immeasurable high SDI. The multimedia filters that were in place at the time were simply not capable Pall Aria AP-4 Water Filtration System | Precision Filtration Productsof producing water of sufficient quality or quantity. The multimedia filters also required the addition of costly chemical coagulants. (Click here to read the 2-page story.)

Experiencing rapid RO fouling and reduced water plant capacity, Cavalier was forced to resort to the expensive measure
of trucking in DI water from another plant. How did they solve this dilemma? Pall’s Aria AP-Series Microfiltration System.

The level of small particles fouling the RO units, which could not be removed by the current filters, clearly indicated that a new technology was needed. After an extensive evaluation, Cavalier believed that MF/UF was the best solution. After a trial unit was installed and producing water, the station was able to immediately maximize its MW supply to the power grid. The Cavalier plant was so satisfied with the results that a second AP-4 unit was ordered shortly thereafter.

The most important benefit of this system was that it rendered obsolete the original cooling water side stream multimedia filters. These units used an excessively high volume of water for their backwash, Pall Aria AP-Series Water Filtration System | Precision Filtration Productscreating a lot of waste. Also, the old filters were not capable of removing fine solids (sub 10-micron), so Cavalier’s cooling water solids loading was weighted heavily with fine particulate. The AP-4 units reduced cooling tower waste water quantity and increased cooling water quality. The cost of water treatment for the 12 months prior to installing the Pall Aria system was $0.99/MWh, $0.25/MWh of which was spent on multimedia filter coagulant. The addition of the microfilters allowed Cavalier to discontinue the use of coagulant, which meant a bottom line savings of nearly 25%!

Most Efficient Combustion Turbine Air Filters On The Market

April 8, 2010

ATTENTION: Upgrading combustion turbine intake air filters saves power plants thousands of dollars!

  • Have you noticed your turbine efficiency decreasing?
  • Have you found contaminants entering your engines?
  • Have you had concerns about maintaining air purity standards?

Combustion Turbine Intake Air Filter

The solution may be easier than you think…

A power plant customer of ours recently requested support with their combustion turbine air intake units. It seemed that it was time to replace the intake air filters that protect the CT engines from airborne particulates. In order to provide a solution as soon as possible, we recommended our “MV Plus” Combustion Turbine Intake Air Filters. These particular units offer the lowest initial air resistance while maintaining the highest rating of flow efficiency on the market. This means big savings for power plants that operate combustion turbines. Seems like a rather tall claim, you say? Well we can prove it with scientific performance data. We are in receipt of independent lab results which prove that our CT air filters will help you save money more than any other competitor.

In order to conduct the tests, an independent lab compared our MV Plus CT filter to a similar filter model of a major competitor brand. (Click here to download the PDF document of the full test results.) The tests were made according to standard EN 779:2002 /1/. The test aerosol was DEHS and the bipolar aerosol charger (neutralizer) was a radioactive Am-241 source. The particle counter was of type PMS LAS-X. The filter Combustion Turbine Intake Housingmaterial discharging tests were made on a complete filter. Discharging was made by loading the air filter with diesel engine exhaust gas. The air flow rate was measured with a calibrated orifice plate with corner pressure tappings. The orifice plate had been calibrated against an orifice plate built according to ISO Standard 5167:1980 /2/. The independent laboratory was accredited to perform measurements according to EN 779:2002.

Success Story: Got Dirt In Your Pipeline???

February 18, 2010

Ever have a filtration emergency but didn’t know who to call? Check out this success story from our pipeline filtration expert, Charlie Dinan…

My cell phone rang just as the Labor Day weekend was about to begin. I immediately recognized the voice on the other end of the line. It was my customer, Joe, who operated a major multi-products pipeline in the Northeast. He wasted no time in conveying the urgency of his emergency situation. “Charlie, I have waist-high rouge in my fuel storage tanks! If we can’t fix this I can’t move automotive gasoline on Labor Day weekend!” Obviously this was a major crisis for Joe.

After assessing the situation I quickly determined that the “rouge” (a common name given to iron oxide) was coming from corroded pipes within the fuel oil refinery. We immediately dispatched our rental mobile filtration systems in order to protect the pipeline from further contamination. Meanwhile, we began troubleshooting the existing outbound filtration system. Pipeline Filtration | Precision Filtration ProductsWhen we opened the refinery’s system we realized two things: 1. the large extent of the problem and 2. why the pipeline was seeing such high dirt loads. This particular refinery’s filter vessels were 60 feet (~18 meters) in diameter and approximately 5 feet (~1.5 meters) deep. Each filter vessel was filled to the top with dirt that looked like coffee grinds. I learned that the refinery had decided to utilize reusable metal filter technology. Unfortunately, metal filters do not belong in fuel oil service. This was the reason the pipeline was seeing such elevated particulate levels! Metal elements are not able to continuously retain particle matter over the life of the element. Instead, they will release high concentrations of metal solids downstream in the process.

In order to rectify the situation, we designed some disposable replacement elements that contained multiple layers of synthetic microglass filter media. We knew that if we could capture the larger particles on the outside of the filter it would create a “cake layer”, which then would act as an extension of the filter media itself. In the meantime, the inner filter layers would catch the smaller particulate, thus polishing the fuel and greatly increasing the service life of the replacement elements. So did it work? YES! When all was said and done, we were able to ensure that clean fuel oil was consistently delivered to the pipeline, while minimizing the refinery’s total cost of ownership. Good news – That pipeline refinery hasn’t had a single upset in fuel oil quality ever since.

Bottom Line: The estimated savings to the refinery when considering pipeline and tank cleaning was well over one million dollars. Got dirt???

Sincerely,

Charlie Dinan at Precision Filtration Products
